8 limbs of yoga – asanas (poses)

This is a brief monologue on the meaning of asana. Asana is one of the branches from Patanjali’s 8 limbs of yoga. This is suitable for anyone new to a yoga practice.

The word “asana” comes from the ancient Sanskrit language. Asana roughly translates to “seat” in English. The word is commonly used to refer to the postures or poses of physical yoga practice.

8 limbs of yoga – the yamas (social disciplines)

This is an overview of the yamas of the 8 limbs of yoga as laid out by the great sage Patanjali. The yamas consist of 5 sub-limbs. Each is listed below and briefly addressed in the video. The depth of each sub-limb is exceedingly vast, thus further study is recommended by the author.

Yamas – Social Disciplines

ahimsa – non violence
satya – truth
asteya – non stealing
bramacharya – non excess (attachment to Bramah)
aparigraha – non attachment

8 limbs of yoga – the niyamas (personal disciplines)

Here we take a look at the niyamas, or personal disciplines. Niyamas consist of 5 sub-limbs (listed below). The depth of each of these sub limbs is vast. This video is simply a scratch on the surface to each. Deeper study is highly recommended by the author.

saucha – cleanliness
santosha – contentment
tapas – self disciplines
svadhyaya – self study
ishvarapranidhana – surrender

A one minute introduction to the 8 limbs of yoga as set out by the great sage Patanjali. This is a very brief overview to this series of explanatory videos on each of the 8 limbs.

The hope is that these videos are short and easy to digest for all levels of experience. It is great to have an understanding of the larger picture of yoga if you are only familiar with the westernized emphasis on poses alone.
